Question: Can I insure a van, which is in my name, for my brother who has a licence but I do not have one?

Answer #1:

I don't know of an insurance company that will sell you a policy without a driver's license.

Answer #2:

Yes, without a problem and it's done frequently. Consider the "driving miss Daisy" situation. Just name the drivers on your policy.

My mother in law owned a car for years, never had a license but didn't want to put people out. Her sons were named as drivers on the policy.

Answer #3:

You can buy insurance for any licensed driver as a driver of your van even though you don't have a license. Keep in mind however that you could be held financially responsible if he has an accident and the damages are more than the insurance limits or if he gets tickets. As long as you bought the van for your brother you should consider signing the title over to him and then you won't have any financial responsibility for anything that happens to the truck. If you don't want to "give" him the truck give him the title and have him sign a personal note that he owes you the money The important thing is to have your name removed from any documents connected to the truck.
