Date: September 10, 2006 Category: Criminal Charges: POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE Disposition: Dismissed Broker Comment: ON SEPTEMBER 10TH 2006, WHILE A 19 YEAR-OLD COLLEGE SOPHOMORE, I WAS AT A PARTY AT WHICH THE POLICE WERE CALLED AND WAS ARRESTED FOR POSSESSION OF COCAINE. AT THE TIME THE POLICE ENTERED THE APARTMENT I HAPPENED TO BE IN A ROOM WHERE THE DRUGS WERE LOCATED. I WAS NOT USING THE DRUG, BUT WAS ARRESTED ALONG WITH OTHERS AS WE WERE SITTING IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THEM. SHORTLY AFTER THE ARREST I RETAINED A LAWYER, WHO RECOMMENDED I APPLY FOR THE COUNTY'S "DRUG SCHOOL" PROGRAM. AT MY INITIAL COURT APPEARANCE ON OCTOBER 5TH 2006 I WAIVED MY RIGHT TO A PRELIMINARY HEARING AND WAS APPROVED FOR THE PROGRAM. DRUG SCHOOL IS A PROGRAM WHEREBY YOUTHS ARRESTED FOR NONVIOLENT POSSESSION HAVE THEIR CASES POSTPONED IN LIEU OF A COUNSELING PROGRAM WHICH GOES OVER THE LEGAL, PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL HAZARDS OF DRUG ABUSE. THIS WAS AN ENLIGHTENING EXPERIENCE, ONE THAT HARDENED MY RESOLVE TO STEER CLEAR OF ILLEGAL DRUGS AND THE PERILS THAT COME WITH THEM. I COMPLETED THE PROGRAM ON 11/4/2006 AND THE CASE WAS DISMISSED IN COURT 1/26/2007.
